Yoshiyuki Matsumura was born in Osaka, Japan and moved to New York after graduating from Osaka University of the Arts. Inspired by contemporary American photographers like Robert Frank and Stephen Shore, he started working on a documentary series of his travels across the United States. In 2014, he self-published the book "AMERICAN SAMPLES" based on his annual train trips between the East and West coast. Since then, he has published ten books.

He is currently working on documentaries and collaborating with a number of fashion brands. He has been featured in publications including M Le Monde, Vogue Ukraine, Vogue Homme Paris, L’Officiel US, GQ US, GQ France, Hero magazine, Heroine magazine, Mr. Porter, Pleasure Garden magazine and Numero Homme.
